Supercomputers operate at the maximum operating speed or the best throughput rate for data processing. The main difference between supercomputers and simple computer systems is computing power.

A supercomputer could perform calculations at 100 PFLOPS. The processing speed of a standard general-purpose computer is limited to tens of gigaflops to tens of teraflops. Supercomputers consume enormous amounts of energy. As a result, they generate so much heat that users have to store them in cold environments.

Development Of Supercomputers

In the early 1960s, IBM introduced the IBM 7030 Stretch and Sperry Rand introduced the UNIVAC LARC, the first two supercomputers deliberately built to be significantly more powerful than the fastest commercial machines.

In the late 1950s, the United States government consistently supported the research and development of next-generation high-performance computing technology for defense purposes, thereby influencing supercomputing development.

Although only a few supercomputers were initially manufactured for government use, the new technology eventually reached the commercial and industrial sectors and spread the technology further. For example, Control Data Corporation (CDC) and Cray Research dominated the commercial supercomputer industry from the mid-1960s to the late 1970s. Seymour Cray’s CDC 6600 is considered the first commercially viable supercomputer. IBM developed into the market leader from the 90s to today.

How do Supercomputers Work?

Supercomputer architectures consist of many central processing units (CPUs). These CPUs are organized into groups of compute and storage nodes. Supercomputers can have many connected nodes to solve problems through parallel processing.

The largest and most powerful supercomputers are multiple processors working simultaneously and performing parallel processing. There are two parallel processing methods: symmetric multiprocessing and massively parallel processing. In other cases, supercomputers are distributed, meaning they draw power from many PCs in different areas, rather than having all CPUs in one place.

Supercomputers are measured in floating point operations per second (FLOPS), whereas previous systems were generally measured in IPS (instructions per second). The higher this value, the more efficient the supercomputer.

Unlike traditional computers, supercomputers have many CPUs. These CPUs are organized into computing nodes, each with a processor or group of processors (Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP)) and a memory block. A supercomputer can contain a large number of nodes. These nodes can work together to solve a specific problem using interconnected communication networks.

Due to today’s supercomputers’ power consumption, data centers require adequate cooling systems and facilities to accommodate all of these devices.
